In a state which derives over 25 percent of its GDP from manufacturing, northeast Indiana is a major contributor to this output. Based on GDP from Bureau of Economic Analysis, the following statements can be made:
When compared to all 3,141 U.S. counties, the counties in Northeast Indiana are heavily concentrated in manufacturing as seen by the following statistics:
>> Noble and LaGrange counties are in the top one percent of all U.S. counties in percent of all jobs in the manufacturing sector
>> Dekalb and Adams counties are in the top two percent and Whitley is in the top three percent
>> Steuben, Wabash, and Huntington counties are in the top 10 percent of all U.S. counties
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics QCEW program there were over 73,000 persons employed in manufacturing in northeast Indiana in 2008 by 874 manufacturing establishments. This represented 26.9 percent of the total private workforce in the region, or 23.9 percent of the total workforce.
In the last seven years, between 30-35 percent of all Northeast Indiana's total wages, both private and public sources have come from the manufacturing sector.
