Hispanic is not a race, but an ethnicity in Census terminology. Those declaring themselves to be Hispanic were given an opportunity to indicate race and are included in the chart above. Out of the 681,728people living in Northeast Indiana in 2010 34,809, or 5.1%, reported that they were Hispanic.
Allen County is home to a large Burmese refugee population. According to the 2010 Census 3,846 Burmese live in Allen County.
Japanese Saturday SchoolThe Division of Continuing Studies at IPFW has a
Japanese Saturday School that is available to area residents of any age or nationality for instruction in Japanese language and culture. The JSS is certified by the Japanese Ministry of Education and Foreign Affairs with a primary focus to help children of Japanese nationals who are working in the region keep pace with their former classmates in Japan. It also serves adult workers at area Japanexe companies and their family members.
Korean Saturday SchoolThe Division of Continuing Studies at IPFW has recently added a
Korean Saturday School that provides education in Korean language for preschool and K-12 school children according to the general curriculum prescribed by the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology of Korea. The school will offer Korean, Korean-American (including Korean adoptees), and American children opportunities to understand Korean culture adn to gain cross-cultural experiences by teaching them in Korean.
Spanish ImmersionSpanish immersion is also available at
Lindley Elementary in Fort Wayne. At Lindley, students learn to comprehend, speak, write, and read in both English and Spanish. The school is a member of the International Spanish Academies Program, that partners with the Ministry of Education and Science in Spain.
