Solstice Sees Growing Market for RFID Tags
Solstice Medical LLC has reached the production stage for its radio-frequency identification (RFID) products and doubled in size in the last year. Revenue has doubled as Solstice Medical markets to and supplies the technology to the medical and radiation oncology industry, among other industries, as well as companies who use RFID tags to keep track of inventory. more

Novel Hydraulic Transformer Raises Worldwide Interest
A local Fort Wayne emerging company patented a revolutionary digital hydraulic transformer that is at the forefront of technology, pushing efficiency levels to new heights for companies that implement it. DigitalHydraulic manager Elton Bishop, reports that the ground-breaking technology requires 71 percent less energy than conventional hydraulic equipment.  more

New Section of Fort to Port is Now Open
A section of a key transportation artery from Fort Wayne to Toledo is now open. The 2.9-mile stretch is the first part of the U.S. 24 Fort to Port highway open to traffic in Indiana. The new section will immediately connect at the state line to 45 miles extending to the east side of Napoleon, Ohio. The second section of the Indiana project is currently under construction and the final two sections will be placed for contract bid in 2010 and completed in 2012.  more  

Indiana to Promote Economic Development with Japanese Firm
Indiana has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with a Japanese company to promote economic growth.  The agreement with ITOCHU Corporation comes after 12 executives from the general trading firm met in Indiana to discuss follow up matter with economic development officials.  This comes as a result from discussions held earlier this year during Governor Mitch Daniel's trade mission to Asia. more


GOING GREEN

More Green Jobs Grants Come to Indiana
The Indiana Department of Workforce Development (DWD) and Indianapolis Private Industry Council Inc. (IPIC) are receiving green jobs grants from the U.S. Department of Labor. The money from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act will be used to support job training and labor market programs to help workers find jobs in expanding green industries. DWD is receiving $4 million and IPIC will get $100,000. more


NORTHEAST INDIANA SUCCESS
ITT Researchers Win Honor
Researchers for Fort Wayne-based ITT Communication Systems have been honored for work on a battlefield system to protect soldiers from friendly fire. James C. Isaacs and his team at ITT won the 2009 Philo Farnsworth award from Fort Wayne's Science Central. Isaacs and his team developed ITT's Radio-Based Combat Identification system, which automatically tells combat aircraft whether they're about to shoot friendly forces. The award was named for Philo T. Farnsworth, a Fort Wayne inventor who held patents that facilitated the development of the TV. more

Governor Honors Businesses for Longevity, Community Service
Governor Mitch Daniels honored 97 Indiana companies for longevity and community service today by awarding them the Governor's Century or Half Century Business Awards during an Indiana Statehouse ceremony. Sixteen of the companies honored are from northeast Indiana. more

Trine University Student Wins National Award
A Trine University student has swept all the top awards at the 2009 American Institute of Chemical Engineering National Student Design Competition in Nashville, Tennessee, the definining national contest for chemical engineering. Brian Ashenfelter's design includes a process by which a bio-fuel can be produced by making butanol from corn. The university says Trine students have won the competition in three of the last four years.  more

Economic Development for a Growing Economy Tax Credit (EDGE)
Economic Development for a Growing Economy (EDGE) is a refundable tax credit program that rewards companies creating jobs and contributing to the growth of Indiana's economy. EDGE credits are calculated as a percentage of payroll tax withholding and applied to state income tax, for net new Indiana jobs. EDGE credits may be awarded for up to 10 years. Each year, a limited amount of EDGE credits are also available for the retention of jobs in highly competitive situations. The company must commit to maintaining operations in Indiana for at least two years beyond the term of the company's EDGE award. Find out more

County Updates

ALLEN
Maxim Medical Services announced that it will move its distribution and headquarters operation to Allen County. The medical equipment provider will invest $1.6 million and is slated for completion in 2012. more

Craftline Graphics announced that it is expanding its Fort Wayne location. The children's activity book printing company will invest $1.5 million in a project that will add 75 new job positions. Craftline Graphics will also retain over 100 current jobs. The expansion is a result of Craftline Graphics' bringing to Fort Wayne one of the largest publishers of children's activity books in North America. Craftline will provide the publisher with printing, warehousing and fulfillment capabilities. more

DEKALB
Rieke was recently honored with inclusion into Indiana's exclusive Environmental Stewardship Program after it decreased its water use by 17 percent in one year.  Less than 50 Indiana companies and less than 1 percent of Indiana manufacturing companies have qualified and earned this status.   more

Lt. Governor Becky Skillman recently named Waterloo, IN part of the Indiana Main Street program administered by the Indiana Office of Community and Rural Affairs.  Waterloo will now gain access to additional support for economic development efforts associated with the development of their downtown and commercial business districts.

LAGRANGE
Governor Mitch Daniels honored Schlemmer Hardware of LaGrange County for its longevity and community service efforts at a ceremony held at Indiana's Statehouse.  Schlemmer Hardware was founded in 1888 and was one of 97 companies state-wide to receive this year's honor.

The LaGrange County Economic Development Corporation was approved for funding in the amount of $250,000 to seed the LaGrange County Investment Fund by the LaGrange County Commissioners and the Council at a special joint meeting. 

NOBLE
Seven businesses from Noble County were among many honored Thursday by Governor Mitch Daniels for longevity and community service. The awards were presented at the Indiana Statehouse during the annual Governor's Century and Half Century Business Awards ceremony. more

The East Park Roberts Addition infrastructure improvements are now complete, literally paving the way for new industry at the East Industrial Park.  According to Derby, there is an undeveloped parcel at the south end of Riemke Road which will now have access to city utilities and the infrastructure additions also allowed for the recent expansion of Courier Corp. more

WABASH
After 18 months of work, the Economic Development Group of Wabash County has successfully secured deficiency guarantees from the City of Wabash and Wabash County in support of  manufacturer Harvey Industries.  The city and county have each agreed  to guarantee 5 percent of Harvey's working capital through CEDIT funds.  Harvey Industries is the largest aluminum casting operation in the country and is currently working on contracts with GM that have brought in 200 new positions with more likely to come.

WHITLEY
The Whitley County Consolidated Schools Board of Trustees recently passed a series of resolutions that indicated its intention to move forward with the creation of a New Tech high school in Columbia City.

Family-owned Johnson Bros., Sign Co., is celebrating the success of three generations and 80 years of commitment to providing top quality signs throughout Indiana and all over the United States.  Imagination, quality and customer service have contributed to the establishment of the local company's continued successes in northeast Indiana.

Whitley County's first annual Veteran's Marathon attracted runners from all over Indiana and surrounding states, successfully showcasing its extensive hospitality and prompting one runner to dub the race the "Greatest Small Town Race in the Country."
