New program takes 'pulse' of region's businesses
Economic development agencies in 10 Northeast Indiana counties have joined in a new, computer-based program designed to track local and regional trends to improve business expansion and retention efforts.

ERAPSCO Lands Military Deal
A Columbia City company has been awarded another military contract for sonobuoys. ERAPSCO says the $34 million deal with the U.S. Navy involves devices that will support antisubmarine operations. Some of the work will be performed in Columbia City while the rest will be carried out in Florida.

County's Internet rates high for speed
Northfield, Minn.-based ID Insight on Wednesday said Allen County is one of the nation's fastest Web connection areas. The "Fastest 25" list also included Delaware County, which includes Muncie, at No. 7. Allen County was No. 21.

Fort Wayne Ranks 8th in Nation for Investment in 2009
Conway Data Inc.'s New Plant Database also ranks Fort Wayne 8th among metropolitan areas with populations ranging from 200,000 to one million. 2010 Top Metropolitans included Angola tied for 31st place, and Kendallville tied for 57th place. Overall, the state of Indiana ranks 10th.

Indiana Airports to Share More Than $5 Million
The Federal Aviation Administration is providing seven airports across the state with more than $5.1 million in grants for use in projects that will enhance the safety and capacity at the facilities. The projects include $1.2 to rehabilitate the taxiway at Wabash Municipal Airport.

The Vision 2020 Coordinating Group, comprised of leaders from across the 10-county Northeast Indiana region, held its third session March 10 as it continues the work of the Vision 2020 process aimed at improving the vitality of Northeast Indiana's regional economy. more

Huntington University to offer marketing degree beginning fall 2010
The marketing degree will be offered through the university's business and economics department. Classes will focus on the principles of marketing, salesmanship, market research, consumer behavior, business communication, financial management and advertising and promotion. Enrollment is currently under way.

State Launches Free Job Training
The Indiana Department of Workforce Development (DWD) is offering free online training for Hoosiers looking to improve their job skills. Participants can select from more than 750 courses, including desktop computing, project management and PC basics.

Conexus Indiana has announced a new Web-based community to link firms with suppliers throughout the state. Officials say Indiana Supplier INsight could create new opportunities for companies, while streamlining supply chains and encouraging more Indiana employers to do business with the state.

Lifelong learning
IPFW and Ivy Tech are helping the regions workforce increase knowledge and prepare for the future with specialized programs. IPFW is providing classes for area workers wanting to upgrade their skills through training in computer numeric controlled machining at the university's cutting-edge Haas Technical Education Left. Ivy Tech works with employers and WorkOne to develop specific career training programs for those already in the workforce. The emphasis is strictly on the practical and the professional training students need to get and hold on to jobs.

Growing Indiana
Economic Development for a Growing Economy Tax Credit (EDGE)
Economic Development for a Growing Economy (EDGE) is a refundable tax credit program that rewards companies creating jobs and contributing to the growth of Indiana's economy. EDGE credits are calculated as a percentage of payroll tax withholding and applied to state income tax, for net new Indiana jobs.  EDGE credits may be awarded for up to 10 years. Each year, a limited amount of EDGE credits are also available for the retention of jobs in highly competitive situations. The company must commit to maintaining operations in Indiana for at least two years beyond the term of the company's EDGE award.

ALLEN
Central States Enterprises recently announced it will expand its New Haven facility, located at 356 Hartzell Road. The company, which specializes in grain storage and marketing, will invest $3.3 million and add two new jobs. Project completion is scheduled for October 2010. more

Hypersonic Technologies announced it has expanded and moved its headquarters from 3400 East Coliseum Boulevard to 9933 Dupont Circle Drive West, located in northeast Fort Wayne. more

DEKALB
DeKalb County's largest employer with 625 on its roster, Steel Dynamics Inc. has been operating near full capacity for several months, officials said. more

LAGRANGE
Starcraft RV, a division of Jayco, Inc. and the LaGrange County Economic Development Corporation announced the re-opening of the Starcraft RV manufacturing facilities in Topeka, IN. This announcement follows the suspension of operations at the Topeka facility in January 2009 due to the economic recession and downturn in the recreational vehicle market. more

NOBLE
City officials recently learned from the Indiana Department of Transportation Fort Wayne District that Kendallville has been awarded $437,332 as part of Indiana's approximately $4 billion from the federal government's $787 billion American Recovery and Reinvestment Plan. more

Two Ligonier factories announced plans to add a total of 50 new jobs, giving hope to city officials that the economy is starting to recover. more

Albion family, Brandon and Jane Bitting, along with their 60 acre family farm were recognized with the Hoosier Homestead Award in recognition of more than 100 years of commitment to Indiana agriculture. more

WHITLEY
Lt. Governor Becky Skillman has awarded Whitley County a $195,000 Community Economic Development Program grant for purchase of capital equipment to expand the operations of Greatbatch Medical. more

The Indiana State Department of Agriculture recognized Pete Eshelman and Heritage Farms for his farm-management practices. The agency gave him a plaque and certificate for completing the Certified Livestock Producer Program, which recognizes farms that exceed industry standards in five areas.

Groundbreaking has occurred for the new Eel River Trailhouse on Whitley Street, this structure will serve to enhance the convenience and usability of the trail.
