BUSINESS State Announces 'Companies to Watch' The Indiana Economic Development Corporation says 41 companies from 18 counties have made the third annual "Companies to Watch" list. It is compiled by the group's small business development center network, Purdue University and the Edward Lowe Foundation. This year's companies range from energy development to food production and information technology firms. more
Vera Bradley files to become public company Vera Bradley, the Fort Wayne producer of colorful, quilted handbags, luggage and accessories, wants to become a publicly traded company.Vera Bradley Inc. filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission for a $175 million initial public offering. The company would list its shares on Nasdaq. more
MEDICAL St. Joseph Hospital unveils suites for relatives of burn victims The families of burn patients at St. Joseph Hospital have a new place to stay, and at a lower cost. Three years in the making, the Northeast Indiana Burn Council showed off the new Burn Family Suites of Northern Indiana on Tuesday afternoon. The 1,600-square-foot area is located on the third floor of the medical office building, adjacent to the hospital. more
Parkview Celebrates Topping Off Ceremony Parkview Health in Fort Wayne says it has passed the halfway point of its $536 million regional medical center project. Hospital officials held a topping off ceremony to commemorate the final steel beam put into place at the construction site. The project remains on schedule to open in 2012. more

Harrison College to start nursing program Beginning this fall, Harrison College in Fort Wayne will offer a registered nursing program, through which students can obtain an associate degree in as little as two years. more

Growing Indiana Industrial Development Grant Fund The IEDC provides financial support for infrastructure improvements in conjunction with projects creating jobs and generating capital investment in Indiana. This grant provides money to local governments for off-site infrastructure projects associated with an expansion of an existing Indiana company or the location of a new facility in Indiana. State funding through the IDGF program must be matched by a combination of local government and company financial support. more

ADAMS At the Berne City Council meeting, Smith Brothers Furniture controller Chris Frauhiger announced Smith Brothers Furniture's plans for an expansion that would add 32,000 square feet of storage. The cost for the storage expansion is estimated at 1.65 million dollars, although the new space would be used mainly as storage it would open up space for line expansion at the main plant. This line expansion would add 12 new jobs. Frauhiger received two 10-year tax abatements from the Berne City Council to cover the expansion project.
ALLEN Saratoga Potato Chips, LLC has announced that it will locate a facility in Allen County. The company, which produces traditional potato chips, kettle chips and popcorn, will bring 175 new jobs to the area and invest more than $4.9 million. The project will begin in August, with the final phase scheduled for completion in 2013. more

Canadian Car auctioneer, Rob Myers, has purchased 235 acre Kruse Auction Park. Myer will continue the tradition of a Labor Day Weekend classic car auction; an annual tourist draw in auburn since 1971.
HUNTINGTON The Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) conducted a public meeting to receive public comment regarding an air quality permit being sought by the Helena Chemical Company as they evaluate Huntington's Park 24 for a potential agricultural dry and liquid fertilizer blending, packaging and multi-state distribution center. IDEM is expected to issue a decision on the permit application in late July or early August.

Coupled Products LLC, is in the automotive business and has recently moved equipment for part of the business' operations to Whitley County from an Ohio facility.The business employs 92 people and plans to add numerous jobs in the coming years, some of which will be offered to union employees who were laid off and have recall rights for up to two years. more
A local business which specializes in medical implants, surgical equipment and other needs in the medical field not only added 11 new jobs in the last year, but also plans to add another 11 in coming years. The county council approved a 10-year abatement for Greatbatch Medical, which will go toward a new project with new equipment. more
