Talent Initiative announces availability of $2.3 million in professional development grants Talent Initiative released the guidelines and application for $2.3 million of Talent Initiative Professional Development Grants. The Talent Initiative is a regional program that was established last year by a $20 million grant from Lilly Endowment Inc. Of the $20 million, $2.3 million was earmarked for professional development efforts centered on STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) curricula and project-based learning (PBL) in public and private schools in 11 Northeast Indiana counties. more
REGIONAL EFFORTS 1,040 attend Vision 2020 Regional Economic Summit Fort Wayne has probably never played host to a larger meeting devoted to economic development than the Regional Economic Summit. By an electronic count midway through the event at the Grand Wayne Convention Center, 1,040 people were present. more
New lobbying group takes regional approach The new Regional Chamber of Northeast Indiana is expected to offer a unified economic development voice through advocacy targeted at the legislative and executive branches of government, regional economic development officials said. more
BUSINESS Publication highlights 2009 Indiana job initiatives A national magazine has recognized Indiana for several economic development initiatives. Area Development Magazine has given the state a 2010 Silver Shovel Award for attracting what publishers describe as "high-value investment projects that will create a significant number of new jobs in their communities."

Aerospace firm awarded Army contract A London-based aerospace company has received a $32 million contract from the U.S. Department of Defense, with the work to be performed at its facility in Fort Wayne. BAE Systems Controls Inc. will produce control units for the U.S. Army. The contract runs through June 2015. more

IPFW engineering department lands national grant The National Science Foundation has awarded Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne Department of Engineering a nearly $700,000 grant to support graduate students in wireless and systems engineering. IPFW says the funding will help with the growing employment needs of local defense/aerospace contractors. more
Ivy Tech launching green jobs training Ivy Tech Community College is introducing a new green technology training curriculum. Beginning this month, the college will offer sustainability courses, including LEED Green Associate, BPI Building Analyst and BPI Envelope-Shell training. Ivy Tech is partnering with sustainability training provider Everblue Energy Inc. of North Carolina for the programs.

Growing Indiana Hoosier Business Investment Tax Credit The Hoosier Business Investment Tax Credit (HBITC) program encourages capital investment in Indiana by providing a credit against a company's Indiana tax liability. The credit amount is based on a company's qualified capital investment with the final credit amount determined by the Indiana Economic Development Corporation (IEDC), based on an analysis of the economic benefits of the proposed investment. HBITC is established by IC 6-3.1-26. more

ALLEN Lincoln Printing, a Consolidated Graphics (CGX) company, has announced that it will invest in new equipment for its 3310 Congressional Parkway location. The printing company will invest approximately $487,702 and bring on two additional employees as a result of the project. The equipment is expected to be installed July 2010.

HUNTINGTON Huntington County Economic Development was recognized by Area Development.com for the 2009 Onward Manufacturing Attraction Project. Area Development reviewed the top 10 job creation projects for each state and awarded Indiana a Silver Shovel Award. Huntington's Onward Manufacturing Project was the sixth largest job creation announcement in 2009 and was the only attraction project in the top 10 according to Area Development.

The Kendallville Economic Development Advisory Committee (EDAC) recommended the Kendallville City Council grant Courier 10 years of tax abatement on a 50,000-square-foot addition to its 200,000-square-foot warehouse at 3094 Lester Drive in the East Roberts Addition to the East Industrial Park.Tax abatement applications for the warehouse expansion and new equipment at Courier's manufacturing facility indicate the two projects, representing about $17 million in investment, will add 80 jobs to the company's Workforce.

WABASH Bill Konyha, president and CEO of the Economic Development Group of Wabash County, announced that Living Essentials is more than tripling the size of its 200,000 square-foot national distribution center and warehouse in the Wabash North Industrial Park. more
WHITLEY Whitley County-based Micropulse Inc. has formed a facility for startup companies in the medical device industry. The OrthoVation Center is home to four companies including Del Palma Orthopedics LLC, Nanovis LLC, BioSpine LLC and Sites Medical LLC.
Two companies in Whitley County have announced expansion plans that would create more than 90 jobs. Startup manufacturer PDQ Workholding LLC says it will invest more than $3.8 million to lease space in the Gateway Industrial Park, and commercial painting provider Steve Reiff Inc. plans to invest more than $1 million to add to its current South Whitley-area operation. The company is contracting with another Indiana firm to paint hubs for wind turbines.
