Northeast Indiana Fund releases the 2009 Business Dynamics Report
The Northeast Indiana Foundation reported that the region marked progress in 2009 by attracting 17 new companies with more than 1,000 jobs and 137 expansions of existing business adding more than 3,000 jobs to the area's workforce.

Parkview Huntington Hospital named a Top 100 Hospital
Parkview Huntington Hospital has been recognized by Thomson Reuters as a 100 Top Hospital award winner. Thomson Reuters recently released its annual study, which identifies the 100 top U.S. hospitals based on their overall organizational performance. more


Berne Bank Flourishes in Hard Times
The independent rating firm, which ranks banks in 32 states, reviewed financial reports issued by 110 banks in Indiana last year. The consulting firm started comparing bank performance on eight criteria about a decade ago as a way to measure progress of banks that are strategic planning clients. This year, Berne Bank was ranked number one. more   

EDUCATION
Indiana Tech to Build New Energy Lab
Indiana Tech says it will use a $300,000 gift from Steel Dynamics Foundation Inc. to establish a new energy engineering laboratory. The facility will be housed on the school's main campus in Fort Wayne and feature state-of-the-art equipment for instruction in alternative energy sources. The university says it will name the building the Steel Dynamics Energy Engineering Laboratory.

Trine, Lakeland to Launch New Tech High School Initiative
Trine University and Lakeland High School in LaGrange County will partner this fall on the New Technology High School model. Officials say the initiative provides a method of learning and teaching to succeed in the 21st-century global economy. Through the curriculum, Lakeland High School students will be able to enroll in the Trine Middle College program and receive dual credit.

GREEN INDIANA
Revolving Loan Fund Available to Hoosier Companies
Commercial and industrial facilities throughout the state will be able to make energy efficiency upgrades through a new initiative. The Indiana Office of Energy Development is launching the Hoosier Energy Loan Program (H.E.L.P.), which will provide low interest loans from $50,000 to $500,000. H.E.L.P. will have $2 million available and expects to fund anywhere from 5-10 large energy efficiency retrofit projects.

County Updates

ALLEN
Lutheran Health Network has announced that it will locate a medical office building in New Haven. The equivalent of 16 full-time employees will work at the medical plaza when it opens, with more expected in the future. The total project investment is approximately $1.9 million. Site work is slated to be completed in August. more

Global Energy Resources has announced it will expand operations at its New Haven facility. The company was founded in 2009 and produces an additive for renewable diesel fuel. Project completion is slated for 2010 and will be an overall investment of $950,000 and an addition of 14 jobs. more

The Fort Wayne-Allen County Economic Development Alliance held its initial Swagger Awards Banquet in April at the Grand Wayne Convention Center. The awards were given to recognize companies that have grown in Fort Wayne-Allen County. more

DEKALB
Worldwide Auctioneers will expand its Labor Day weekend collector car auction in Auburn to three days and 530 cars, the company announced. Worldwide began its Auburn Auction in 2008. For the first two years, it featured approximately 80 cars in a four-hour sale on Saturday night of Labor Day weekend. The sale again will take place on Worldwide's site along the east side of lnterstate 69 at the DeKalb-Allen county line. The expanded auction will begin Thursday, Sept. 2nd and conclude Saturday, Sept. 4th.  

The City of Auburn is seeking proposals from qualified companies for a downtown Auburn revitalization plan. The city hopes to receive a grant of up to $50,000 from Indiana Office of Community and Rural Affairs that would be used to draw up the plan. As part of the grant application requirements, the city is seeking statements of qualification from firms interested in the project. The City hopes to submit the planning grant application by the end of June.

LAGRANGE
The LaGrange County Council through a unanimous vote granted tax abatements for a building addition/expansion at Cruiser RV, LLC of Howe.The abatement is for a period of ten years and is for a 10,200 sq ft. building addition, valued at $220,000.  more

NOBLE
Creative Wood Designs Inc., makes furniture for the recreational vehicle industry at its plant in the Ligonier Industrial Park. Over the past six months, the company has added a substantial number of new jobs to the local economy. more   

Kendallville has been awarded a $455,000 economic development grant to help create 65 jobs at Creative Liquid Coatings Inc.

The Avilla Town Council took a large step toward what could be a technological leap for the entire community.The council voted 3-0 to approve a total of $140,000 to hang 7.8 miles of fiber optic cable on the town's utility poles. In the short term, the move will allow the town to control both of its power substations from a single computer in the Town Hall. more

Filming will begin for the first of two episodes of a new television show called Savor Indiana. Noble County was the first county in the state to commit to the production, and along with Madison, Indiana, will be the first filmed with broadcast set for May. more

WHITLEY
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is awarding Columbia City $400,000 in funding for community-wide brownfield assessment. The hazardous substances and petroleum grants will be used to determine the appropriate cleanup to reclaim the sites for redevelopment. The Whitley County Economic Development Corporation is working with prospective buyers interested in redeveloping brownfields in the area. 

Locally based C&A Tool Engineering announced  that it is expanding production capabilities at its Churubusco area headquarters and production machining facility. C&A Tool is in the process of adding new inspection equipment and tooling that will further enhance the company's ability to solve customers' problems with uncommon results. more  

Whitley County has added a large chunk of land to be designated for economic development, with the creation of a new tax increment financing TIF district in the eastern part of the county. The 119 acres of the new TIF district is west of county Road 600 East on the south side of the current TIF district, which runs the U.S. 30 corridor to the east of county Road 400 East.
