Verizon Communications Inc. announced plans to cut 13,000 jobs in January, but on Friday said it plans to add workers in Indiana.

The New York company said in January the job cuts would be from its struggling fixed-line phone business.

On Friday, Verizon announced plans to hire 110 people in Indiana, 80 in Fort Wayne.

The pay ranges from $10 to $27 an hour. Installers/technicians, customer service and support positions are immediately available. Verizon employs about 1,200 workers in Fort Wayne, but none was affected by the job cuts in January.

The company has had no recent retirements, employee buyouts or similar reductions. Spokeswoman Christy Reap said the openings simply are due because of a need for workers, not necessarily increased sales in Fort Wayne.

"Verizon is delivering cutting-edge products and services to consumers and businesses, and we're looking for great people to help us take our customer service and sales support to an entirely new level," Kathy Koelle, vice president of sales and marketing of Verizon's North Central region, said in a statement. "This is a great opportunity to work for a dynamic and evolving company."

Koelle noted the company has received praise from various magazines, most recently by Fortune, which called Verizon the "most admired company in the telecommunications industry."
